Dottie Mancini Park Closure Updates

On December 7, 2023 Dottie Mancini Park, located behind the Imperial Point Hospital Complex, was locked down by Broward Health as a result of contract renewal negotiations with the City of Fort Lauderdale, thus denying Imperial Point residents and our surrounding neighborhoods the enjoyment of this great family oriented park.

The Association is dedicating this page to include timely updates to the Park Closure. There have been various social media postings on this subject, some of which are not accurate, adding confusion to this sensitive situation.

After negotiating a temporary solution, The Imperial Point Civic Association was able to have the Park opened for our annual (December – Christmas Theme) “Winter in the Park” on December 20. The event was originally planned for December 16 but bad weather forced the delay. The Association produces two other annual family oriented events at Dottie Mancini Park. Linked to Easter timing (March/April), we do “Spring Fling” and in the Fall (October) we do “Fall Harvest”.

Imperial Point Association is actively engaged with the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward Health to end this closure of our park!

Current Updates on the Park Closure

1-15-24 – The Annual General Meeting for our Voluntary Neighborhood Association (VHOA) took place on January 15, 2024 at Fire Station #35 on Commercial Blvd. In addition to our general business agenda, we invited city, county and Broward Health officials to attend so that we could vent our displeasure, as well as gain some insight on the park’s future. We are told the park will reopen but no time line has been provided.

DOTTIE MANCINI PARK CLOSURE DISCUSSION – January 15th Meeting

Special Order Dottie Mancini Park Closure

          Speakers

  • Mayor Dean Trantalis
  • City Manager Greg Chavarria
  • Broward Health Commissioner Stacy Angier
  • Broward County Commissioner District 4  Lamar Fisher
  • Notably absent District 1 Commissioner John C. Herbst

Mayor Trantalis gave a history of events that led to the closure of the park. There was a lease between City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward health for $1 per year that expired. Broward Health has asked for land to build a medical facility in exchange for the land that was “leased” to The City for the creation of Dottie Mancini Park. A deal fell apart that was made to satisfy this request. In the absence of another option, Broward Health locked the park citing a lack of agreement to allow the park to be open.

The City and Broward Health are exploring other options such as leasing the Park land to the City at fair market value and/or another land option.

We tried to get an exact date for the park to reopen and all parties stated that this is an important priority and it will happen soon. When pressed on what does soon mean, they were not willing to commit.

We expressed our extreme disappointment with our elected officials and Broward Health for holding our Imperial Point residents and families hostage while negotiations are ongoing for something that should have been solved before the lease expired.
